What to Do When Chasing Your Dreams Becomes Boring
The one obstacle no one talks about (and how to overcome it).
Here』s a truth no one tells you about following your dreams: At some point, you』re going to get tired of it.I don』t mean you』ll get discouraged. You』re going to get bored.
The thing is, most people who follow their dreams love a challenge. They love being dared to do something no one thinks they can do.
When we get an idea we pounce on it like a cat before it can scurry away. Starting new things — big or small, no matter how scary — gives us an adrenaline rush (probably) akin to jumping off a plane.
The problem is that once the excitement fades, we get bored. We』re not necessarily impatient, but we get tired of the familiar. The same routines. The same work.
This is a problem. Here』s why.
The One Obstacle No One Tells You About
Boredom is a dream killer. We don』t like being bored, so once we are, we quit. Even worse, we assume that because we』re jaded, we』ve fallen out of love with what we do (which is also why we give up).
Instead of spending years developing one skill, as we should, we jump from ship to ship, finding new pirates to fight and planks to jump off of.
We become entrepreneurs and writers and even musicians all in one year. It』s not a matter of whether things are working out or not. Even if the numbers are in our favor, if we』re bored, we』ll move on.
I』m in that space right now. That 「bored phase」 where everything is familiar. It makes me want to quit writing on Medium and find a new platform to write on, a new trial to tackle. It has nothing to do with the platform itself — it』s me.
My routine has worn out.
One Question You Need to Ask Yourself
Your solution to boredom is probably the same as mine: move the hell on. But you don』t want to do that — not deep down, anyway. You like what you』re doing. You want to stick around for years and years. But holy shit, you』re bored. You need that adrenaline rush from a new challenge.
What』s a better solution? What can you do so that you don』t quit? You find challenges within this career. Not outside of it.
You need to ask yourself: How can I change things up?
Instead of going to another city to traverse, you need to find a different part of that same city to explore. An unknown one that will spark that excitement you miss and pull you out of the familiar you』ve come to despise.
What You』re Missing
Right now, I』m bored because I realized I』ve said everything I need to say about the topics I』ve been writing about.Tom Kuegler said it best in an article recently:
"Most writers write about the same 5 things over and over again. We do this really cool thing where we say it in different ways, though, and the audience buys it as something new. There』s no swindling going on — we』re not tricking anybody — it』s just a natural step in the creative process."It』s normal for creators to get burnt out because they get stuck in the same routine. You need to find a solution.
My solution as a writer? Find something new to write about. You need something new to cook, to record, to draw, to paint. You haven』t lost your love for what you do — you lost your love for your system.
You need a new challenge. A new topic. A new muse. A new location. You love the struggle, so give yourself one. You don』t have to jump into a whole new journey and ruin what you』ve got going for you.
Find one thing, big or small, and start doing it differently. If you make YouTube videos, it might not be the content you need to change. Maybe you should learn to edit your videos better, more professionally. If you』re a writer, you could attempt to write a short story per week.
Challenges Are Everything
Right now, you』re doing work that you don』t need to think hard about anymore. It』s passive — almost unconscious. You sit, and you work without worry that you』ll struggle. You might be able to live with that for a while, but eventually, you』re going to miss the hurdles. You』re going to miss messing up and feeling determined that you』re going to figure out how to jump over the next obstacle.
I』ve been spending my time writing articles I already know how to write. I was bored. Writing this right now? I』m not bored.
I submitted this piece to this publication thinking it』d be accepted as usual. Instead, the wonderful Nicole Akers had notes. 「Make it deeper,」 she said. 「Share a story.」
I didn』t know what I was going to do. I barely had any idea what she meant. I re-read my article, and I knew what the problem was, but I didn』t know how to fix it.
I started writing about it, and I realized: my struggle is what this piece is all about. This is a test.
I was stressed because I didn』t know how to fix it, but I liked that I had to figure something out. I liked that someone told me to do something I didn』t know how to do.
This is what writing — what all art is about: challenging yourself to be better even if you don』t think you can be. It keeps chasing your dreams exciting. It doesn』t have to be redundant.
Seek the tests. Don』t run away from them.
What If You Don』t Know What to Change?
Learn something new. Open your mind to new ideas by watching videos, admiring other people』s work, and reading books. Ask people for advice and ask them where you can improve. You』ll gain new knowledge and ideas. Learning will give you the challenges you need because when you learn something new, you have to apply the advice.
It』s an opportunity for you to step out of your comfort zone. Take advantage of that. Don』t let the knowledge go through one ear and out through the other.
New ideas will challenge what you know.
If you』re a makeup artist, take an online class. If you』re a writer, buy books about writing. If you』re a baker, play around with the old to create something new.
Final Words
I had a coaching call with Ayodeji Awosika last month. He gave me new tips to apply, articles to write, and more. It was a lot, but for the month, I was on it. All I wanted to do was write because I had new things to try. That』s the power of challenging yourself. Of aiming to be better. It keeps the spark alive and ensures your dream doesn』t die.
You don』t have to abandon what you know. I』m not going to give up on Medium just because I』m bored.
You』re not an all-knowing expert who knows everything about their job and career. Find out what you don』t know, and then do something about it. Spark excitement within.
Don』t find a new box to jump in — make the one you know bigger.
